After having oil change for your BMW, the inspection and oil light stays on, and for some owners it is very annoying. I can be really upsetting for other drivers to see the oil service light on.   • The first thing that you should do to begin the BMW inspection and oil light reset is to turn the ignition on (ignition key position II, not start).

  • Open your hood and look for the diagnostic data port located on the right side of the of the engine bay. To give idea what the diagnostic data port look like, see the image here.
  • Remove the cap and you will see a hole with terminals or pins. It has twenty pins and each one has designations. But the inspection and oil light reset, we are only concerned with pin 7 (service indicator light) and pin 19 (ground).
  • You will have to connect pin 7 and pin 19. Insert one end to terminal 7 first, and the other end into terminal 19. Connect pins 7 and 19 with the use of jumper wire between terminals. Some people use paper clip to connect both pins. You will need to make sure that you have better contact with the conductors in the pins.

Remember that there is a slight difference between the oil service light reset and inspection light reset. Keep the jumper into the two pins with the ignition on for about 3 seconds and the oil service light will reset, and if you keep the two pins connected for about 12 seconds and the inspection light will reset.
